Cadettes create a ton of fun while earning badges.

Our classes will incorporate all the required steps plus a ton of creative fun to while completing a Cadette Badge. All supplies are included. Our Studio Director, Melanie Terry is a lifetime member of the Girl Scouts and is passionate about spreading her love of creativity!

Actual Badge is not included but all requirements will be met to earn the Badge. There is a minimum of 6 girls in order to carry out the event. Cadette Comic Artist Badge

2-hours, $20 per girl – Each Girl will take home a Canson “Make your own comic book kit” which includes a sketchbook, comic stencils, drawing pencil and more.

Step 1 – Delve into the world of comics – Visit with a comic artist:  The workshop leader will discuss the work of three different comic artists. The leader will talk about the different styles and show examples of the artist’s work.

Step 2 – Choose a story to tell – choose a subject:  The girls will think of a story to make their comic about.  The story can be from life, a book, a movie, or something made up. The girls will be encouraged to write a short bullet point list of the important events in her story.

Step 3 – Draw it out – Use a how-to book, video or software:  The workshop leader will show different “How-to” books and explain how to draw specific characters. The characters will be determined by what kind of story and characters that each girl wants for her comic.

Step 4 – Frame it in four panels – Use both facial expressions and body posture:  The girls will draw on actual comic board and construct a comic with at least four panels.  The workshop leader will show examples of how to use facial expressions and body postures to help communicate an idea.

Step 5 – Add the words – choice of style:  The girls will use words to add dialogue with speech bubbles, show a single character by using thought bubbles, or tell a narrative story in separate boxes above or below the panel artwork.

Cadette Book Artist Badge

2-hours, $25 per girl – Each Girl will take home long-stitch book and Strathmore Art Journal Kit.

Step 1 – Explore the art of bookbinding – Interview or visit a book artist or bookbinder:  The workshop leader will introduce a book artist or bookbinder to the girls. The book artist will talk about how he/she got involved in book arts, why he/she loves making books, and examples of books that he/she makes.

Step 2 – Get familiar with the insides of a book – Take an old book apart:  The workshop leader will carefully take a book apart and talk about the names of the parts of the book and how it was made.

Step 3 – Try out book artist techniques – Fold method and stitch method:  The workshop leader will also discuss tools and materials used in book making and discuss different types of books and binding methods.

Step 4 – Focus on function – Make a scrapbook, memory book, or personal journal:   The girls are going to get creative thinking about what they have learned about books by making an art journal. Each girl will receive a Strathmore Art Journal Kit and will learn several different techniques on how to make the journal her own.

Step 5 – Focus on style – Make a book from something unexpected:  The workshop leader will instruct the girls on how to make a book with a long-stitch binding out of reused materials like paper bags, magazines, and scraps of decorative paper.
